Best Places to Eat in Aarhus, Denmark
When I knew I was going to be traveling to Denmark I made it a point as I do with all new destinations to look up the top restaurants and best places to eat in Aarhus.
Embarrassingly before I went to Denmark and thought about what the cuisine would be like I thought mostly of pickled herring, heavier food that would be maybe considered “comfort food” and food that I guess would be well stored through the harsh winters. 😂
I spent 5 days eating my way through Aarhus and I am determined to go back and check off more world-class restaurants from my to-eat list. If you are going to Denmark, make sure to visit Aarhus and eat at some of these incredible restaurants!
Nordisk Spisehus $$$
Nordisk Spisehus is a bit on the fancier side with prices ranging from €50-€150 for lunch/dinner tasting menu. They take some traditional Danish dishes and create something all-new, fresh and light leaving you feeling satisfied but not heavy.
Beef tartare White Fish Strawberry Sorbet
Raadhuus Kafeen $$
Raadhuus Kafeen is a place my friend picked to take me to try some traditional Danish dishes made in a more traditional way. AKA Pickled Herring and schnapps. They have a rather large menu with a lot of different options but they do have a rear lunch tasting menu for two that gives you several different types of fish dishes to try including two different herrings.

Indisk – Aarhus Street Food $-$$
Aarhus Street Food is an area of old shipping containers transformed into many different restaurants and the variety here is stunning. Asian food, American food, Latin food, and traditional Danish food all in one place. I got several small plates from different vendors and could easily spend a whole day eating my way through this place. There is even a grilled sandwiches place that offers a s’mores toasty that looked to die for but I just couldn’t eat anymore.
Orange Cream Pop Savory Tart
Hantwerk $$
Hantwerk gave me all the feelings of Hygge. It’s situated on the canal right by the water with plenty of outdoor seating, warm incandescent lights and plenty of cozy blankets for the cool weather. They have a range of beers on tap and their food comes in small tapas-sized portions so you can try several things and share with a friend, but only if you want to 😉.

Møf $$-$$$
Møf is a tiny restaurant but full of flavor! I recommend making reservations especially if you are going on the weekend. Since I went by myself I risked it and was able to snag a seat at the restaurant bar which gives you a perfect view into the open kitchen. This was one of the coolest aspects of this place. Both the chef and sous-chef made themselves available for friendly conversation and kindly answered my many questions about the food and their process.
Salad Beef innards Cherry Cream Sorbet
Hærværk $$-$$$
Hærværk in Danish means “Vandalism” but if you talk to anyone from the restaurant they will also tell you they borrowed the name from a book that also references ‘men’ at work. What a perfect name for this place that just overflows with culinary talent. Hærværk was by far my favorite restaurant in Aarhus and not only because the food was orgasmic but because everyone that worked there was passionate about the food, how it was prepared, and how it was sourced, which is all local by the way. Every time I thought I had tasted the best dish the next one just blew me away.
Heirloom Tomatoes Beef w/ Red Current sauce Zuccinnis & Goat Cheese White Fish Creme Brulee Brie & Rhubarb
I recommend making reservations since I went during the week just after the tourist season had ended and I went for an early dinner. While I was there, I got a chance to speak with the head chef and then ended up chatting with the sous chef and some other customers about food, sustainability and passion for quality ingredients well into the wee hours of the morning. If you only get a chance to visit one restaurant in Aarhus, make it Hærværk!
There are so many places to eat in Aarhus and these are just a few. I do recommend you taking the time to explore the local restaurant scene and of course, you absolutely have to try a local hot dog delicacy. Unbelievably delicious and a great lunch if you make sure to get all the toppings!

If you can, give yourself a few days to roam around the city too check out some of my must-sees for Aarhus here.
