Moulay Idriss & Volublis

Moulay Idriss

Moulay Idriss is located in the north of Morocco not far from Meknes. It was only recently opened to non-muslim visitors and is considered to be a holy city so it is painted green. Moulay Idriss or Idriss I for whom the city is named is buried there in the city. He is also believed to be the great-grandson of Muhammed and this city is an unofficial pilgrimage site for many because of it.

At the time of the trip, it was still quite difficult to arrange to visit to stay in the city independently. It was all coordinated and arranged by Intrepid tours who had been visiting and meeting with the locals for some time and building a rapport.

Volubilis

Volubilis is an ancient Berber city in Morocco that is situated only about 5 minutes away from Moulay Idriss. It is still currently being excavated and widely believed to be considered the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania.

We were there in March and managed to see the Ruins and walk around in between some big rain showers but colours of the fields and valley truly came alive before our eyes. The peace and calm I felt there was incredible despite the gray skies looming overhead.

If you are interested in visiting on a day trip you can easily catch a train from Fes to Meknes and then make your way to Moulay Idris and Volubilis from there by taxi. Entry to Volubilis is around 70 dirhams ($7ish).
