Agueda, Portugal
Agueda, Portugal is really close to Aveiro and Costa Nova making the travel distance to Agueda from Porto (40 minutes) and Lisbon (about two hours) about the same. If you were limited on time, you could potentially do both of these locations on the same day if you had a car.
The Umbrella Sky Project
Agueda has embraced color, fun, and street art in a fantastical and fancy-free way. The idea behind the Umbrella streets around the world is growing in popularity. Despite all my research there seems to be conflicting information about who originally came up with the idea however I believe it was The Umbrella Sky Project. Portuguese creative visionaries came up with it as a way to raise money for charity and from there, art took over and spread to the rest of the world!

Color Everywhere
There are different kinds of umbrellas and different colors painted all over town. Agueda has fully embraced the umbrella concept, selling them everywhere and everything with umbrellas on it. Not just umbrellas though, brightly colored balloons, huge street murals, painted benches, pots filled with flowers of hot pink, red, and yellow lined all the different main streets of Agueda, Portugal.

There are also stairs all over the central area of Agueda and they are all painted brilliant colors! It’s easy to stay a whole day wandering around taking photos of this town! My rainbow heart couldn’t have been happier!

While I was taking these photos one local lady told me to wait there until the sun came out as it was partly cloudy. She said it’s much better in the sunlight as the colors paint the ground. She was not wrong! Walking through Agueda felt kinda like walking through the board game Candyland!

Agueda was on the top of my little towns to visit while in Portugal and I can’t recommend it enough to everyone I know. Go! You won’t be disappointed!
