Essaouira, Morocco
The city of Essaouira in Morocco has a long history of changing hands between countries through the centuries as many port cities throughout the world have.

This little beach town is stunning in color, culture, food, and surf and it’s a fantastic place to get some rest and relaxation on the beach if you’ve been traveling for a while.

Many travelers come through Essaouira and never leave. While there I met a few people, one from Argentina, one from France, and one from Italy. They had all arrived in Essaouira over twenty years ago and decided to stay. After even only a few hours in this little city, it’s easy to see why.

The old Medina in Essaouira has been considered a Unesco World Heritage site since 2001. It is very small and cozy and easy to walk through in a day or so. The shops are colorful and bright and the doorways just pull you in daring to be opened and explored.

As you make your way through the open-air fish market past the fruit & veggies stalls, walking by all the colorful vendors and painted walls you’ll eventually find your way out of the medina and down towards the beach. There you can enjoy some locals dancing, singing and playing drums along the boardwalk.

The boardwalk along the ocean is a great place to sit down and grab a classic Moroccan mint tea or a nous nous (half coffee and half milk) only about 20 dhs each.

Essaouira is a perfect city for a weekend trip while traveling around Morocco just be sure to bring your sunscreen, your sunnies, and your camera!
