Otavalo Market, Ecuador
Otavalo Market in Ecuador is one of the largest Indigenous markets in South America. It’s about a 2 hour bus ride north of Quito and certainly worth the day trip.
We went by bus from Terminal de Carcelén in Quito, once you arrive there it is pretty easy to spot the Otavalo signs at the ticket booths. It was approximately $2.70 to go and $2.50 to return. Saturday is supposed to be the busiest day but since we went earlier and in January it really wasn’t too crowded.
The place was just so massive and there was no shortage of things to look at and little areas to explore. There are plenty of places to stop for tea or a snack and don’t forget the sunscreen because with the altitude the sun even on overcast days can be harsh and take a toll on your skin.
If you want to add to your adventure you can make your way to Lake Cuicocha where you have a stunning view of Cotacachi Volcano. We ended up taking a taxi ($25) and he waited for us while we took some photos and admired the view. You can take a bus but it only takes you so far and then you have to walk up the rest of the way which is about 4 km uphill.
