The Sahara Desert – Morocco

The Sahara desert is the largest hot desert in the world. Until I visited the Sahara in Morocco I had no idea that Antarctica and the Artic were considered deserts. I had zero concepts of cold deserts but regardless of my experience with hot deserts none of them compared to the stunning beauty the Sahara offered me on our short jaunt into this hot and dry wilderness.

The Sahara Spell

Recently I met someone who came up with the phrase the Sahara Spell and I really don’t know if anything could describe the Sahara desert in Morocco any better.

Our drive into the desert waasssss… bumpy and long to say the least. There were about 5-6 of us in each small SUV. Driving over miles and miles of sand and rocks. If you get easily carsick like me you will definitely want to try and sit in the front or near it, take some Dramamine, wear your sea bands and have water handy.

We stopped a couple of times to get out and stretch our legs, take photos and wait for the other cars to catch up, some of the cars had flat tires so there were some replacements needed at least twice.

Adventuring out to the middle of the Sahara desert was no easy task but the drivers and guides know the desert like the back of their hands and despite the fact that I was sure I would’ve gotten horribly lost had I tried to do any of this on my own, they drove us to our camp safe and sound as I’m sure they have done hundreds of times before.

When the sun sets over the Sahara desert and night settles in, it is both mesmerizing and a bit terrifying. It is so dark and easy to get turned around but laying under the blanket of stars is breathtaking!

Sunrise comes early & quickly in the Sahara and if you’re lucky it’ll be accompanied by a hot cup of Moroccan Whiskey (Moroccan Mint green tea).

And just like that its practically mid-day again. Very bright and very warm and just as magical as ever!
